MALAKAR COMMUNITY
It is said that when lord Shiva was going to wed with Himalaya’s daughter Parvati, he desired to wear a conical white hat. So the artist Vishwakarma starts finding appropriate material for making that hat, a kind of plant grew in the wet land as desired by Shiva was found by Vishwakarma. But Vishwakarma was used to working with only hard materials like stone or wood and not with soft shola. Once again at Shiva’s desire there appeared in the marsh a handsome young man and he was named Malakar. Now anyone who got engaged with this Shola pith craft is known as Malakar and belonging to the Hindu communities. They Worship lord Shiva as they believe he owe their existences and therefore are obliged to worship him. (Ghosh, 2015) |
Tool that is required for making the craft are not complicated at all. They are simple with distinct function. Generally, there are two kinds of tool. One is Kat, which is a fine steel cutter for making shola craft like duma, Dhari (shola materials used to make malas) etc. this is basically a knife that has around 5-6 version with fine edges as well as blunt sides.
